List of minefields |
Place | Risk level | Province |
Sokolačka Kula | From Bihać to Sokolac, you can tell heavy fighting took place. Some travel guides advise not to stray off the trails because of residual minefields. By miming "boom" to them, the locals assured me that there were no worries. Caution is probably called for if you're really going deep into the wilderness. This is a border area, with clearly visible signs of fighting, but any excess of paranoia would spoil the visit of fortress, which is safe. |
Una-Sana canton |
Cincar | Hikes to summits are well marked and safe. If you drive to Donji Malovan, it is strongly advised not to deviate from the road, as there are still areas in the surrounding forests that are infested with mines, as indicated by several signs along the road. |
Canton 10 |
Raduša | The Raduša Massif extends from canton 10 to the Herzegovina-Neretva canton. There are a few tracks that allow you to venture there, but do not deviate from them as several forests are still heavily mined. | Canton 10 |
Šator | Šatorsko jezero and hikes around are safe. Along the drive to the lake, do not leave the track because the surroundings are still dotted with minefields. |
Canton 10 |
Podvelež plateau | According to some locals, the strategic position of the plateau during the last war suggests that minefields are still present in some places; others are more reassuring, arguing that the area has been cleared and is safe to visit. Caution is advised, with any false paranoia set aside. | Herzegovina Neretva canton |
Stolac | With the exception of the fortress, it is recommended not to walk off the roads around the city since some areas are still mined. | Herzegovina Neretva canton |
Borašnica (Prenj range) | It is strongly recommended not to move away from the immediate vicinity of the former military base on the summit of Borašnica. | Herzegovina Neretva canton |
Zelena Glava (Prenj range) | Midway to Zelena Glava, there is a sign warning hikers not to deviate from the well-marked trail because a section (forest) down the trail is at that spot still mine-infested. The rest of the hike is cleared. | Herzegovina Neretva canton |
Mount Igman | Mount Igman offers a lot of hiking, provided you dont venture off the marked trails. The region has indeed been the scene of heavy fighting. It was also on Mount Igman that 9 French Blue Helmets died in a road accident while on a demining mission in the area. | Sarajevo canton |
Goražde | The whole area around Goražde should be visited with much caution. Forget about any exploration on your own out of the beaten tracks. For example, Kučarim Goršić Polje (Ruda Glava) necropolis is extremely difficult to find. In addition, that area is still infested with minefields. | Bosnian Podrinje canton |
Zavidovići | The area has been the scene of fierce fighting during the last war, which explains the presence of a few minefields in the surrounding forests. | Zenica-Doboj canton |
Mount Trebević | Hikes on marked trails take you into the coniferous forest that covers Trebević, or take you to explore the Tvrđava draguljac. Once again, it is best not to venture off the marked trails. | Sarajevo Romanija region |
Samobor | Here more than anywhere else, it is absolutely out of question to leave the marked trail because of minefields in the area. For other hikes in Bosnia-Herzegovina where this type of welcoming committee awaits you, the trail is most of the time well marked; here it is too, except that it crosses a clearing that leaves you to rely on your sense of direction. The warning about the minefields here is really to be taken very seriously, as evidenced by 3 indicators: boards in Goražde that describe the places not to venture into the area; the board at the start of the hike; the advice of the locals who offered their services to accompany me safe to the fortress. |
Foča region |
Treskavica | The region changed sides several times during the last war, each dislodged occupant leaving behind a few surprise gifts (minefields) to his enemy. On the other hand, the trails are extremely well marked, and given the number of visitors to the area, it is likely that only the remote corners of the range are still dangerous. | Foča region |
Sutjeska NP | This National Park is so pure in beauty and the place makes you feel so free that its a shame the place has to be listed in this section. Fortunately, mine-infested areas remain in remote places. In addition, a board next to the small tourist office in the park informs the areas not to be explored on your own. | Foča region |
